Our plan for the day was to go and have a look at the somme in Paschendale at the end of Shatter series. This quickly got changed when we met a group of Derbyshire cavers from Eldon PC at the Mud Sump on the round trip. They asked if we had seen there friend coming up the streamway as he had just dived what they thought was sump 1 but we soon found out they had got lost and he had free dived sump 3. Andy then went back with the group to the streamway while Phill and I went round the round trip to blue pencil and onto sump 3 in record time. With only one set of dive gear between us Phill dived through first, located the stranded caver in the airbell between sumps 2 and 3, tought him to cave dive and sent him through sump 2. His friends who were now the other side of sump 2 escorted the rather cold caver out of the cave. Phill then dived back to me gave me the cylinder while he free dived back thorugh and I dived the two sumps in a very thin wetsuit no hood and no mask - very very cold. Needless to say we abandoned our trip as the the cylinder had now been mostly depleted.

Went in the short dry way and down to the pitch where there was so many people trying to get both up and down the pitch we decided not to bother and headed back out the wet way.

The aim of the trip was to re-survey the passage between sumps 8 and 12. This went very successfully. We started by diving through to sump 10 where we dropped all our gear, we then went back to the end of sump 9 and surveyed through sump 10 and then along the passage to sump 12. That took us about 2 hours and we were no rather cold but I decided to dive through sump 9 to get the exact length of this sump (exactly 30m) and the dived back through again removing the tape and then back through again with Phill to exit the cave. A few more bearings were taken in Swildon's 8 before we packed up all our gear. While doing this Andy turned up and volunteered to carry the empty 6 litre cylinder, I had used to survey sump 9, out of the cave.

We started off by diving through and re-surveying between sumps 9 and 12. With the partially full 6 litre cylinder I then dived sump 9 and surveyed that. Both Phill and I then dived back through sump 9 and surveyed between sumps 8 and 9. As we were packing up to leave we met Andy Stewart on his way in to help carry some of the gear out. A very productive day was had.
