My first trip into Cuthberts with use of my own key. While we were down at sump 2 Mike was doing his proving trip with Mick Wilson and people from Nottingham University. Down at sump 2 I climbed up one of the previously rigged ropes and using another rope traversed across a thick mud slope where I could see into a tube but could not see how far it went. From as far as I could get along the traverse I dropped a rope down to Jake below who used it to climb part-way up the calcite slope below this tube. From here he was going to start bolting up the rest of the slope. Once bolting operations started there was an immediate problem - the drill bit was completely blunt so I took this as a good opurtunity to shoot out so Mike and I could go climbing at Goblin Coombe. The others packed up the gear and followed me out. Another trip will be planned but with a sharper drill bit.
