After spending far too long fetling with diving kit we decided to transfer our diving trip to the Sunday and do a quick OFD trip instead. After arguing with political SWCC members about callouts e.t.c we headed to OFD top entrance which was full of people getting lost. Once in the stream no one else was to be seen until OFD1. Route finding was generally o.k. with the streamway being at a low enough level to get down. We met Bea & Ollie in the OFD1 boulder choke and all headed down to the bottom entrance. OFD1 streamway was also o.k. to get down without doing the by-pass. An excellent sporting trip.
An efficient start was had and we were soon lugging all our kit (tackle bag full of diving kit, 9Ltr and 4Ltr cylinder each) into Bridge cave. Eventually we reached Bridge sump whereupon all our kit was unpacked, sorted out, the sump dived and then all the kit re-packed. We were now in Little Neath River Cave, which was quite impressive. This was also the start of an extremely hard carry to sump 2. The river bed had a slimy coating which didn't help carrying all the kit. Mike had a scary experience after slipping on a rock and ending up head down in the stream pinned down by the weight of his kit. Upon reaching sump 2 we kitted up in cramped conditions on a sand bank. I dived about 1m into sump 2 where I found a broken dive line knotted in the entrance. I untangled the line and dived in with it. At the end of the line, the continuation of the rest of the line still could not be found. I returned where I took a line reel and continued further into the sump. There was lots of floating, broken line and viz was limited. Another line was found disappearing into a small slot between boulders. The way on could not be located. Two very pissed off divers re-packed their kit and carried it all the way back to Bridge cave sump where we dived out and returned to the surface, very tired & pissed off.
Bridge sump was a nice crystal clear dive - passing lots of fish on the way. It was then the first sump in Little Neath where we found the line had broken a short way in. I returned to get a line reel, dived back in and layed the line to try and find a route through. With all this I had stirred up the viz and the way on could not be located so we returned to daylight.
