Caving: Rhino Rift (25-Mar-00)

This trip was hopefully going to be the first of many to re-open the dig at the bottom of rhino. 10 scaffold bars and a tackle sack of clips were collected from the belfry and dropped off at rhino by Cardiff uni. We then had the job of dragging them over the hill and down the valley to rhino. We later found out that the landowner was more than happy to let us take them through his garden. Once in rhino mike went ahead to rig the first pitch while Suzy and I dragged the bars and clips down. Once at the first pitch I abseiled down with the first batch of 5 then prussiked back up where upon mike abseiled down with the second batch. Eventually after overcoming a number of problems we got alI 10 bars and clips to the bottom of third pitch. SUCC were going down rhino Sunday so we got them to take them to the bottom.

Yet another time down Swindon's where we had forgotten the ladder for the 20'. We had remembered a rope though so we could abseil the 40' pot. Not surprisingly there was a ladder already on the 20' when we got there. We then went down to the landing and up to the round trip to have a look at the troubles. At the top of the landing Crispin decided to wait as he had trouble getting through the squeeze. The first trouble was not that bad but the second trouble had very little airspace and that was in the V in the roof. Carefully I managed to get through proving the round trip is still open even though the mud sump is impassable. I soon returned and we went back to the landing then back out.

When I got out Swildon's earlier on I went with the intention of going digging down Stocks but for some unknown reason J-Rat did NOT want to go digging. So I headed down Swindon's to try and find the others. I finally met up with them just after the 20' and we all went down to sump 2 and then headed back out.
