Yet again another DYO trip and yet again more carrying of cylinders. The previous couple of days were spent compressing bottles at Wookey Hole and making ourselves dive-lights. Our aim was to get a 6 Ltr bottle each down to mazeways in preparation for diving through in a few weeks time. On the way in MG dived into Pot Sump after a few minutes of digging out the buried line so as we could use it as a possible entry/exit if the lakes are sumped. The climb out of pot sump proved too difficult on your own. After this we carried on portoring the cylinders down to mazeways where they were stored with the other kit. Leaving the kit we went round to the other side of the Green Canal to meet Rhys and his sister in Hangar Passage. On the way out me, Mike and Tim exited 20mins after leaving the ladder at the long crawl so as we could exit using the showcave.

Yet another late start but eventually carrying lots of kit and another 6Ltr bottle we headed down to Mazeways. Once there MA and TL headed up to the Far North while MG and I dived into mazeways. The dive didnt go quite as planned due to many different problems. First off the line was tied-off underwater and we had to use a search reel to find the line which turned out to be broken after a couple of meters. Using a line reel found in the mazeways store MG relined the sump connecting with the old line at the junction. Both of us dived through on single sets then went to look for the left-hand passage where this un-dived sump was. Lots of side passages were looked down but when we found the right one where it doubles back on itself was blocked with silt. We tried digging through but this only ended in me getting my head stuck. After exploring lots of other side passages and being impressed by the main mazeways passage we headed out with the bottles and all the other kit. After fighting all the stuff through the long crawl MA and TL caught up with us (convenient) and helped carry some of the kit. We all exited via the cavers entrance with diminishing lights. The objective of diving the sump at the end of the left passage was unsuccessful but at least we repaired the sump line and now are aware the 2nd mazeways sump could also need a lot of line maintenance before a pushing team enter.

More maintenance of kit and the finishing touches to our dive lights ended in another late start but we were in no rush. Tim Mclaine, Lisa Williams and some nutty New Zealand bloke went to dive in Cathedral cave while MA, TL and I went to dive at the end of lake 4. The carry in was easy and I kitted up in the dry passage in Lake 4. With twin 300bar sevens (Plenty of air) I entered the sump following the line through a rather large passage with 1-2m viz. After quite a long time I surfaced in a small chamber with a rock wall in front and a mess of lines belayed to the ceiling. I later found out I missed lake 5 & 6 and continued not as planned to Lake 7. Once rejoing with Mike and Tim after a 20 minute dive, Tim kitted up and dived in and turned round after having problems with kit. Mike dived as planned surfaced in lake 5 and headed back. A successful dive and our first using some sort of buoyancy control.
